RESULTS

Husband & Wife Headed To The Heartland
August 7, 2007

A few weeks after Scott Engle captured the Season IV points championship (Chase for the Championship), his wife, Sharon Engle, won 5 heads-up matches to capture the Grand Championship IV. Both designations earn the Engles a seat at an upcoming Heartland Poker Tour event.

Trocadero's in downtown Minneapolis served as the setting for the first 5th Street Poker Parties Grand Championship with a heads-up format. Leading up to the event, participant James Curtis was leary about the new format. "In discussions with other members, we were unsure if we would like the heads-up format. Now that we're here, this is a really cool event!", said Curtis.

Eleven series champions and the remaining top 53 in Chase for the Championship points were sent invitations to this event. Engle battled through the distinguished field to meet Kate Zissos in the final match. Engle's pocket 9's held up on the final hand to capture the Grand Championship. With the win, Engle earns an additional 2 Hall of Fame Tokens to send her past the 5 token requirement for induction into the 5th Street Poker Parties Hall of Fame.

DETAILS

The Grand Championship Series is a culmination of six months of tournament play in which the series champions and top point earners in the Chase for the Championship compete in 63 heads-up matches within the NCAA-style Grand Championship Series bracket for a seat in an upcoming Heartland Poker Tour event.

Points were accumulated from January 1st to June 30th to detemine the qualifiers for the Grand Championship IV in August (Summer 2007). On July 1st, the overall point standings are reset to zero and a new points chase will begin through December 31st for the 5th Street Poker Parties Grand Championship V in February 2008.

Participants will be seeded into the 64-person bracket based on their final standing in the Chase for the Championship IV. The #1 seed will play the #64 seed, the #2 seed will play the #63 seed, the #3 seed will play the #62 seed, and so on. Each match will end when one person has all the chips. The winner will advance to the next match in the bracket, the loser is eliminated.

Q: What is the difference between the Tournament of Champions and the Grand Championship?

A: The Tournament of Champions and the Seasonal Grand Championship are two different events.

A Tournament of Champions is specific to a venue in which participants compete over a 13-event series. After 13 weeks, the top 35 in points (and event champs) during the series qualify for the Tournament of Champions (14th event) where a $200 Grand Prize is awarded to the winner.

The Grand Championship occurs twice per year during the winter and summer in conjunction with the completion of the Chase for the Championship. The Chase for the Championship is an accumulation of player points across all venues from Jan 1 - June 30 and again from July 1 and Dec 31. The Top 50 in "Chase" points and series winners qualify for the Grand Championship. The winner of the Chase for the Championship is awarded a seat into a major tournament.

The Grand Championship series is a collection of 63 heads-up matches within an NCAA Tournament-style bracket. The member who wins all 6 of their heads-up matches during the Grand Championship series is awarded a seat into a major tournament.
